Welcome to Mrs. Berndt's Portfolio - which includes class syllabi, resources, goals, and supporting evidence.
ENGLISH 8
This class is designed to prepare students for high school curriculum. Students read The Giver and study Greek Mythology, in addition to working on grammar, vocabulary, and writing review. Students also produce a Memory Book which is a collection of essays and pictures from birth through middle school. Independent Reading is also continued, with students reading one novel of their choosing each quarter for a total of four books by the end of the year. This is my second year teaching 8th grade and this was a great group. I look forward to meeting up with them again in 10th grade to see how they've changed.
ENGLISH 10
English 10 is a class designed to prepare students for the MME and ACT. Students will build on the skills they have learned thus far to continue becoming competent readers and writers. During the year, students will read a variety of literature centered on the theme “Outcasts,” including The Crucible, Animal Farm, To Kill a Mockingbird, and Of Mice and Men and concentrate on the connections between their own lives and the literature. Students will also work on reinforcing their grammar, developing their writing style through expository writing and strengthening communication skills as well as learning the research process.
ENGLISH 11
The goal for English 11 is to continue to build a solid foundation of knowledge, skills, and strategies that will be refined, applied and extended as students engage in more complex ideas, texts, and tasks. In English Language Arts 11, students will add to the list of various genres of classic and contemporary narrative and informational texts that will be read and analyzed throughout high school with a special focus on British and World literature and SAT success. Eleventh graders will connect with and respond to texts through transformational thinking. They will learn to use forward thinking to help make better decisions, to generate new ideas for solving problems, and to find wisdom. They will build a context for change in their lives and develop realistic plans for the future. Major narrative texts will include Hamlet and Beowulf, as well as independent reading.

Remind is a useful tool for my classes as well as my extracurricular responsibilities. I'd be lost without it. My weekly lesson plans are linked to my weebly page from planbook. Students and parents are encouraged to communicate with me via email. With the addition of gmail accounts this year, the lines of communication were opened wider. |
Both English 10 and English 11 students have been introduced to Purdue Owl as a resource for writing and citing sources. They have been shown how to navigate the site and use it on a regular basis.
